The Poteau Pirates defeated the Wagoner Bulldogs in dramatic fashion.
A large crowd was in attendence despite the damp, chilly conditions. They came to watch the undefeated, hometown heros play - in what was billed as the toughest test thus far of the 2009 campaign.
Both teams got off to a sluggish start, perhaps in part to the strong north wind that averaged over fifteen mph for the duration of the contest. The score was tied 0-0 at the half, and neather team threatened to score.
Both ballclubs however, came out fired up to start the second half. It was Poteau that drew first blood to go up 7-0. The Bulldog coaching staff made some personel changes in the third quarter, opting to play their injured first-team quarterback. The quarterback sat out the first half due to a nagging ankle injury he suffered in last weeks contest. He breathed new life into the Bulldog offense, which previously had been stymied by the Pirate 'D'. Wagoner rallied to score two unanswered touchdowns.
Trailing 14-7 late in the fourth quarter, the Pirate defense held on fourth down to give the offense a shot at the comeback. Seventy yards stood between the Swashbucklers and a potentially, game tying touchdown.
This was the moment the Pirates would run the hurry-up offensive set to perfection.
Poteau capped the touchdown drive with a gutsy, fake extra-point play- to go ahead for good 15-14.
